Casually searching my name in Google, like any other normal person would do, I bumped into a post of mine at a Mandrake Linux support forum from almost exactly seven years ago… Couldn’t help smiling…

Linux has come a long way, back then it was not as user friendly as it is now…

sound from cdrom ML91

Hello there.

I’m using ML91. I just tried to listen to a cd. KsCD starts up, sound is
at 50%, sound mixer is at 100% for CD, the track seems to be played
(counter works) but no sound comes out.

The audio cable is connected from the Creative PC–DVD drive to CD-In of
Audigy2, but …

Otherwise, sound works fine.

Any ideas/hints?

Scientists create artificial life in laboratory – Times Online.

 

Dr Venter, who has been working on synthetic life for a decade, told The Times: “It is our final triumph. This is the first synthetic cell. It’s the first time we have started with information in a computer, used four bottles of chemicals to write up a million letters of DNA software, and actually got it to boot up in a living organism.
“Though this is a baby step, it enables a change in philosophy, a change in thinking, a change in the tools we have. This cell we’ve made is not a miracle cell that’s useful for anything, it is a proof of concept. But the proof of concept was key, otherwise it is just speculation and science fiction. This takes us across that border, into a new world.”

Quantum teleportation achieved over 16 km.

(PhysOrg.com) — Scientists in China have succeeded in teleporting information between photons further than ever before. They transported quantum information over a free space distance of 16 km (10 miles), much further than the few hundred meters previously achieved, which brings us closer to transmitting information over long distances without the need for a traditional signal.

Quantum teleportation is not the same as the teleportation most of us know from science fiction, where an object (or person) in one place is “beamed up” to another place where a perfect copy is replicated. In quantum teleportation two photons or ions (for example) are entangled in such a way that when the of one is changed the state of the other also changes, as if the two were still connected. This enables to be teleported if one of the photons/ions is sent some distance away.
